Metal Jewelry

Our metal selections include affordable sterling silver, popular 14K and 18K gold, and rare and precious Platinum.

- Sterling Silver

Silver has been valued for centuries and at one time was considered even more valuable than gold. Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925. Today, it's the most affordable of all the precious metals.

- Gold

Few metals capture the heart like gold. A traditional choice for all types of jewelry, gold is the most easily worked of all metals because it is naturally very soft and malleable. Because of the softness of pure (24k) gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. Alloys with lower karat rating, typically 22k, 18k, 14k or 10k, contain higher percentages of copper or other base metals or silver or palladium in the alloy. Gold jewelry is consistently timeless and so elegant.

PAIRIE only uses 18K and 14K yellow, rose and white gold in its jewelry designs:

  • Yellow Gold: Gold is naturally yellow in color, however, since pure gold is very soft, it is usually alloyed with silver or copper to bring out its natural warmth.
  • White Gold: To create the white‐silver color, the gold combined with palladium and silver or with nickel, copper and zinc. White gold also needs to be coated with platinum or rhodium for to improve whiteness and add durability and shine. White gold jewelry will occasionally need to be re‐dipped after the coating wears away.
  • Rose Gold: To create the rosy-pink color of rose gold, pure gold is combined with more copper. The more copper added to the alloy, the rosier the gold will become. Rose gold does not need to be dipped or coated as the color is pure through.

- Platinum

Platinum was a popular metal for jewelry until the early 20th century, when it was taken off the market for military use during wartime. Platinum is extremely durable. It's shiny and beautiful, but it's also a metal that will last for generations. Since the late 1990s, platinum has returned as a top choice for engagement rings and other jewelry.

When used in jewelry, it is usually is mixed with other similar metals, known as the platinum group metals: iridium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium. However, for a piece of jewelry to be labeled as "platinum" it must have a minimum level of purity of at least 90% pure platinum. A purity level of less than 90% would require the metal be identified as a platinum alloy. Platinum jewelry pieces can be identified by the hallmark "PLAT" stamped on the inside of the shank (rings) or the back of the piece.

Platinum has a soft white hue. It's 30 times rarer than gold (which means it's more expensive), 40% heavier than 14K gold and platinum will not tarnish or oxidize, however it ages beautifully by developing a lustrous patina. Because it is so strong and hard, the details of intricately engraved or embellished rings often look sharper and more precise. The bright whiteness of the metal makes it perfect for showing off diamonds and gemstones.
